Neighbourhood Watch and new security grant scheme for residents aged 65+

Neighbourhood Watch (NW) is a community based crime prevention initiative established to better Community/Garda relations and raise awareness of crime prevention methods. It is one of the best known types of local organisations next to perhaps resident associations but is highly effective in tackling crime and protecting the most vulnerable people in an area. An example of its effectiveness can be found quite near to Sandycove/Glasthule in Sallynoggin where in just 3 years of the establishment of NW burglaries have dramatically declined by 68% from 59 to 19. This against a steady increase in burglaries nationally is a testament to the effectiveness of an organised and active NW within a local community.

In terms of protecting the most vulnerable it can play an active part providing funding for security features for older people and even organising volunteers in times of harsh weather for example. The Sallynoggin Neighbourhood Watch currently operates a grant scheme for security features for those aged 65 or above which provides personal pendant alarms, motion sensor lighting and smoke & carbon monoxide detectors all free of charge. Thankfully, this scheme is now being widened to include Sandycove & Glasthule and residents have been invited to apply.

To avail of the grant scheme call James McCann on 085 7125541 or email sallynoggin.nw@ireland.com who will arrange an application form for you. The process is quite simple, the application is completed face to face with the scheme coordinator, James. There is no need for any documentation.  Once the application is approved the scheme coordinator will arrange a security company to fit the equipment at a time convenient for you. Unfortunately the process can take a number of weeks and sometimes months but the equipment can help keep you, a relative or neighbour safe. If you know of anyone who might be interested in the scheme please make them aware of it and don’t be afraid to contact James with any questions you may have.
